Lesson 1. All About The Clay
This lesson introduces Medium Grog Stoneware - an ideal clay for large hand-built sculptures due to its strength, reduced shrinkage, and forgiving nature
-
Lesson 2. Tools & Materials
Explore the tools and the materials you'll need for your course, ensuring you're fully equipped for success.
-
-
DAY 1 - The Foundations
-
Lesson 3. Pinching The Base
This lesson explores pinching as an intuitive hand-building technique, emphasizing consistent wall thickness, proper base compression, and climate-adapted drying to create strong, stable forms.
-
Lesson 4. Rolling Even Coils
This lesson focuses on building strong, even coils by using consistent hand pressure, the tap technique for reshaping, and careful attention to thickness to ensure structural integrity and smooth blending.
-
Lesson 5. Attaching a Coil
This lesson teaches a crack-proof coil-attachment method for strong bonds and polished finishes, enabling you to create seamless, sculptural vessels with lasting strength.
-
-
DAY 2 - Building up
-
Lesson 6. Attaching 3 Coils at Once
This lesson covers building your vessel’s initial structure efficiently by attaching multiple coils, controlling wall shape through placement and smudging, and refining surfaces with ribs and paddle techniques for strong, precise forms.
-
Lesson 7. The Bridge
This lesson guides you in building The Bridge—the foundational hollow space—by shaping a boat-like form, coiling and tapping walls, attaching a slab for stability, and refining roundness for a balanced vessel.
-
-
Day 3 - The Hollow Space
-
Lesson 8. Placing the Ring
This lesson focuses on placing the Ring to guide the building of hollow space, carefully attaching it with a small tool, integrating it into the wall, and maintaining roundness by shaping the vessel’s interior.
-
Lesson 9. Half Way Around The Ring
This lesson teaches integrating the Ring by smudging with fingertips and smaller tools, building it into the wall, patching weak spots, smoothing with a rubber rib, and tapping to shape inward curves.
-
Lesson 10. Top Of The Ring Close In
This lesson covers building walls to the top of the Ring using the rainbow technique, delicate smudging with fresh coils, moisturing as needed, and allowing an overnight rest to firm up for easier refining.
-
Lesson 11. The Loop
This lesson teaches shaping a fluid hollow space using steady loop motions with a wooden tool, tapping curves inward, smoothing with a rubber rib, and sculpting for natural, flowing forms.
-
Lesson 12. Final Close In
This lesson focuses on completing your hollow vessel by creating bold inward curves, carefully joining coils across the ring, and refining shapes through smudging, tapping, scraping, and the loop techniques.
-
13. Shaping The Neck
This lesson guides you in shaping the vessel’s neck by placing coils diagonally, tapping with the curved paddle, smoothing and refining with ribs for an elegant finish.
-
-
Day 4 - The Second Bulge
-
Lesson 14. The Base
This lesson focuses on starting the second bulge by coiling gently on the rim to open the base, allowing it to firm up as support, smudging the inner part, and patching any weak spots for strength.
-
Lesson 15. Opening and Closing in
Open and close-in the second bulge of the piece
-
Lesson 16. The Neck & The Rim
Build the neck and finish the rim of the vessel. Reassess the form to refine irregularities, and bring a smooth, fluid flow to the entire piece
